Overview

Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People is a record created under a very wonderful and unique set of circumstances. I had been working with artists in the Kingston community to score and present performance art at the Artel, and it opened me up to making music very differently than I had previously. In Blackout Cities, my first Paper Sailboat record, started its life very much in my head, transmuted and released. This record, in contrast, was the living embodiment of my experiences with these artists transmuted back inward. It was lovely and stressful time and many ways and I still think of it very fondly!

It's my pleasure today to release an expanded, nearly two hour long update of this sophomore record. This is a complete remaster using amazing tools most of which did not exist when the original was released. Certain songs have been remixed completely with the original mixes in tow at the end for those who prefer the originals. It is my hope that this will feel more magnetic with each listen.

The new additions are all songs written composed around the time of this records creation which were, with the exception being the Uncanny Valley remix of Bow Ties (released in 2018 on Paper Sailboat II). Sonically, I feel these all fit very well and will hopefully embiggen your experience goodly.

I can't tell you how amazing it feels to read all of the warm thoughts left here on bandcamp after all this time, from all of you. I sincerely hope this is a good way of saying thank you, and that I appreciate your support as ever.

Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills for Pale People was a late 19th to early 20th century patent medicine containing iron oxide and magnesium sulfate. It was claimed to cure locomotor ataxia, partial paralyxia, seistica, neuralgia rheumatism, nervous headache, the after-effects of la grippe, palpitation of the heart, pale and sallow complexions, [and] all forms of weakness in male or female.” - Wikipedia

Impetus

When I decided to release this album on Spotify and other streaming services several years ago, I made substantial alterations to the original release, limiting it to eight songs. The goal was to maximize impact; I had this notion that maybe folks wouldn't get the quirkier songs this album has to offer. But this IS a quirky, weird and sometimes dark album. It did these things a lot better in its original incarnation and so what better time to do right by that intent than its ten year anniversary.
